3 Days in Kashmir: The Perfect Weekend Itinerary

Three days in Kashmir is a short trip — but it is enough to see the essential Kashmir, experience Dal Lake, visit Gulmarg or Pahalgam, and return with a genuine sense of the place rather than just photographs of it.

The key to a good 3-day Kashmir trip is focus. You cannot do everything in three days. This itinerary chooses the experiences that deliver the most in the least time — and builds each day around being in the right place at the right time of day.

Who This Itinerary Is For

This itinerary works for:

  • Travellers from Delhi or Mumbai who can fly in Friday evening and return Sunday night or Monday morning
  • First-time visitors who want to test Kashmir before committing to a longer trip
  • Anyone with limited leave who still wants to experience Kashmir properly

It is not suitable for travellers who want to cover Pahalgam and Gulmarg both — three days is enough for one of the two properly, not both rushed. This itinerary chooses Gulmarg as the day destination since the gondola experience is unique and time-efficient. Pahalgam rewards longer stays.

Before You Start

Fly in the evening before Day 1 if possible — a Friday evening flight from Delhi means you wake up fresh in Srinagar on Day 1 morning rather than losing half the day to travel.

Book in advance:

  • Dal Lake houseboat: 3–4 weeks before in peak season
  • Gulmarg Gondola Phase 2 tickets: online at etickets.jammukashmircablecar.com at least 3 days before
  • Airport taxi: arrange with your houseboat in advance

Transport: Hire a private cab for all 3 days — approximately ₹3,500–₹4,500 per day. For a 3-day trip the convenience is worth it.

Day 1 — Arrival + Dal Lake + Old City

Morning — Arrival: Arrive at Srinagar Airport and transfer to your Dal Lake houseboat. If you flew in the evening before, you wake up on the lake — the best possible start. Step onto the deck, have kahwa, and watch the morning lake before anything else.

Mid-morning — Mughal Gardens: Drive to Nishat Bagh — the largest Mughal Garden. Allow 45 minutes. The terraced garden descending toward Dal Lake is at its best in morning light. If time allows, continue to Shalimar Bagh (3 kilometres further) for another 30 minutes.

Late morning — Shankaracharya Temple: Drive to Shankaracharya Hill for the best panoramic view of Srinagar. The climb takes 20–25 minutes. From the top: Dal Lake, the city, the valley, the mountains. Go before noon for the clearest visibility.

Afternoon — Old City: Spend 2 hours in the old city — the lanes around Jama Masjid, the Shah-e-Hamdan shrine on the Jhelum River bank, and the traditional architecture of the old residential quarters. This is the historical heart of Srinagar that most rushed visitors miss.

Late afternoon — Dal Lake shikara ride: Return to Dal Lake for a shikara ride in the golden hour light. The late afternoon light on the lake — the mountains reflected in still water, the houseboats catching warm light — is the image of Kashmir. 1.5 hours on the water.

Evening: Dinner on the houseboat or at a restaurant on Boulevard Road. The houseboat cook’s Kashmiri meal — Rogan Josh, Dum Aloo, dal, rice — eaten on the floating deck at night is an experience in itself.

Overnight: Dal Lake houseboat.

Day 2 — Gulmarg

Morning — Early departure (7:30 AM): Leave Srinagar early. The drive to Gulmarg takes 1.5 hours via Tangmarg. Leaving at 7:30 AM means arriving at the gondola base by 9 AM — when it opens — before the queues build.

Gulmarg Gondola — Phase 1 and Phase 2: Take Phase 1 to Kongdori (3,050 metres) then Phase 2 to Apharwat Peak (3,980 metres) if you have pre-booked tickets. Spend 1.5–2 hours at the top. The views on a clear morning — the Himalayan range, Nanga Parbat visible in the distance, glacier terrain in the foreground — are the highlight of the Gulmarg experience.

Come down from Phase 2 before the cloud builds (typically before 12 PM for the clearest conditions).

Midday — Gulmarg Meadow: After descending, spend time in the Gulmarg meadow. Walk the circumference of the meadow (approximately 3 kilometres, 45 minutes at a relaxed pace). Visit the Maharani Temple at the meadow edge. Horse riding across the meadow is available if you want it.

Have lunch at one of the restaurants or dhabas in Gulmarg town.

Afternoon — Khilanmarg (optional): If energy allows, walk or ride to Khilanmarg — a meadow 6 kilometres from Gulmarg town with views of the Nanga Parbat range. The walk takes 1.5–2 hours each way through pine forest. Only attempt this if you have 4+ hours remaining after the gondola.

Evening — Return to Srinagar: Drive back to Srinagar by 5–6 PM. Dinner on the houseboat.

Overnight: Dal Lake houseboat.

Day 3 — Srinagar Morning + Departure

Early morning — Final Dal Lake: Final morning on the lake. Wake before sunrise if possible. A dawn shikara ride — when the lake is completely still and the first light catches the mountains — is the memory of Kashmir that stays with you. 45 minutes on the water at dawn costs ₹300–₹400 and is worth every rupee.

Mid-morning — Hazratbal Shrine: Drive to Hazratbal Shrine on the western bank of Dal Lake — the white marble domed shrine is one of Kashmir’s most significant religious sites, set beautifully on the lake shore. Dress modestly, remove footwear before entering the complex.

Late morning — Shopping: Final stop at Lal Chowk market area or the Boulevard Road handicraft shops. What to buy: pashmina (verify quality), walnuts and dried apricots, saffron, Kashmiri kahwa tea. Allow 45 minutes.

Afternoon — Departure: Transfer to Srinagar Airport. Allow 30–40 minutes from Dal Lake to the airport. Check flight timing and plan accordingly.

Key Tips

Two nights minimum on Dal Lake: Even in 3 days, staying both nights on the lake is the right choice. Moving hotels wastes time and the lake experience deserves both mornings.

Gondola Phase 2 must be pre-booked: Do not assume walk-in tickets will be available, especially in May–June and December–January. Book online at least 3 days before your Gulmarg day.

Day 3 morning is precious: Do not check out early and head straight to the airport. The final morning shikara ride and Hazratbal visit are worth more than an extra hour at the airport.

Weather backup for Day 2: If Gulmarg Gondola Phase 2 is closed due to weather, Phase 1 alone is still worth the trip. The meadow and Kongdori views are excellent even without Apharwat.
